Intense headaches that appear to be centered around the eyes may indicate glaucoma, one of the most common eye problems in men and women over 60.

Glaucoma occurs when fluids in the eye, which normally drain out internally, lose that ability because of a blockage in a small drainage duct. Pressure builds up and can press on the optic nerve or other structures.

Glaucoma Symptoms

headache

intense eye pain

teary eyes

nausea and vomiting

blurred vision

progressive loss of side (peripheral) vision

Left untreated, glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss and even blindness. Successful treatments include eye drops, pills, injections that decrease pressure in the eye, and laser surgery.

If your headaches are accompanied by these symptoms, call your doctor for an immediate appointment.
